DEVOTIONAL BY DR. BRENT

AN AUDIENCE OF ONE

and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”  Hebrews 10:24-25

I am reminded of reading about the legendary composer Johann Sebastian Bach when he was scheduled to present a new composition he had written to be performed at a church.  Not sure what happened the night it was scheduled, but when he and his musicians arrived there was no one there except those who opened the church building for them.  No one else had come!  He arrived that night expecting a church building filled with people to hear his composition.  But instead of leaving, he decided to lead his musicians to perform as planned.  They all took their places.  Bach and his musicians then proceeded to fill the church with beautiful music!  It was said he described it as being for an AUDIENCE OF ONE!  I remembered this story thinking how only a handful of us are gathering on Sunday mornings right now to fill our empty building with worship, prayer, and preaching.  It is not an easy thing to do.  I do know how difficult this is for you as well.  Even though we are saddened at not being able to gather together with you, we also feel privileged to provide this ministry during this strange and awful time.  I pray each Sunday that somehow you are experiencing the presence of God in your home and are truly worshipping Him!  However, one truth remains the same, all of our worship, preaching, and prayer is primarily for an AUDIENCE OF ONE! The Lord God is the One whom we are focused on and the One whom we are worshipping.  I pray that it won’t be long before we can gather together again as the Body of Christ to focus our attention on the AUDIENCE OF ONE who saved us!  This is the will of God according to the Bible.  We are not meant to be apart, but TOGETHER!  I am praying it won’t be long before we are allowed to be “assembling together” again.  I know that Jesus will see us through this time.  Please pray for us each Sunday morning that the Holy Spirit will empower us to be used in this very “not normal” time.  Please pray for lost souls to be saved.  As always, know that if you need me, do not hesitate to call.

Blessings!
